Matt (he/him) is a public historian and interpretation specialist who has worked at historic sites for more than a decade. His first job in interpretation happened to be in his home state of Massachusetts at the oldest timber-frame home in North America, the Fairbanks House. He learned many things there, including the term public history. At the Fairbanks House, he also learned to appreciate the power of history and how practitioners have historically used it to deny marginalized people their sense of place in the past. Since then, Matt has dedicated himself to harnessing this power to build a more just future.
In addition to doing so through his work in a variety of front-line and leadership positions at historic sites across the Eastern Seaboard, Matt researches the representation of the queer past at museums and historic sites. He began doing so as a part of his public history doctoral program at North Carolina State University (Go Pack!). He now continues to do so through Queering Museums Consulting, which works with museums and historic sites as they strive to better their research, understanding, and presentation of queer history.
