Queering Museums Consulting, LLC

Matt at Valley Forge with one of his favorite queer historic figures, Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben.

Meet Matt Champagne, PhD

Matt (he/him) is a public historian and interpretation specialist who has worked at historic sites for more than a decade. His first job in interpretation happened to be in his home state of Massachusetts at the oldest timber-frame home in North America, the Fairbanks House. He learned many things there, including the term public history. At the Fairbanks House, he also learned to appreciate the power of history and how practitioners have historically used it to deny marginalized people their sense of place in the past. Since then, Matt has dedicated himself to harnessing this power to build a more just future.

In addition to doing so through his work in a variety of front-line and leadership positions at historic sites across the Eastern Seaboard, Matt researches the representation of the queer past at museums and historic sites. He began doing so as a part of his public history doctoral program at North Carolina State University (Go Pack!). He now continues to do so through Queering Museums Consulting, which works with museums and historic sites as they strive to better their research, understanding, and presentation of queer history.

Queering Interpretation

Queering interpretation is a critical step toward making any institution a welcoming place.

During this hands-on workshop, museum practitioners will learn and practice skills that embolden them to make their workplaces more hospitable to queer people and their allies.

Participants will walk away knowing:

  • the subtle ways institutionalized homophobia and transphobia have effected museum theory and practice;
  • the best practices for researching, identifying, and presenting the queer past at museums and historic sites;
  • and answers to common questions about how to engage queer communities, interpret their histories, and do so in ways that bring everyone to the table.

This training is available as a half-day or full-day workshop. Pricing is based on the operational budget of the interested party and the number of attendees. Institutions located more than 50 miles outside of Washington DC should also expect to cover costs associated with travel and lodging.

Conducting an in-depth assessment, writing a report with recommendations, and even crafting a tour or program for your organization are also available services.

Dialogic Interpretation

A dialogic approach to interpretation helps visitors connect with and learn from each other by presenting big ideas in creative ways.

In this skills-based training, museum educators will learn and practice how to curate interpretive experiences with visitors through facilitated conversations.

Participants will leave knowing how to:

  • build community, so visitors freely engage in conversation with each other;
  • celebrate authenticity, so visitors comfortably share their experiences while still learning from others;
  • and inspire action, so visitors use their abilities to make meaningful change in the world.

This training is available as a half-day or full-day workshop. Pricing is based on the operational budget of the interested party and the number of attendees. Institutions located more than 50 miles outside of Washington DC should also expect to cover costs associated with travel and lodging.

  • The Antebellum Era and Civil War
  • Sex in the American West
  • The Invention of Sexuality

These lectures are available as in-person, virtual, or hybrid events. Pricing is based on the operational budget of the interested party, whether the event is ticketed, and the number of attendees. Institutions located more than 50 miles outside of Washington DC that request an in-person or hybrid presentation should also expect to cover costs associated with travel and lodging.
